US Justice Department Intervenes in Legal Challenge to Stop California's Redistricting Plan
Federal authorities have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential further challenges.
